The small Hindu temple of Baksei Chamkrong is located at the base of Phnom Bakheng, between the mountain and the outer moat of Angkor Thom. The temple was built in 968 AD and is dedicated to the god Shiva.

The name Baksei Chamkrong means "The Bird Who Shelters Under Its Wings" and comes from a legend. In it, the king tried to flee Angkor during a siege when a huge bird landed and sheltered him under its wings.
