The artist known simply as Affandi is one of Indonesia's most famous artists. He was born near Jakarta in 1907. He had nor formal education as an artist, but gained popularity in the 1950s with his expressionist style. His work was exhibited in the Venice Biennale in 1954.

In the mid-1970s Affandi began construction of his home and gallery on the banks of the Ganjah Wong River in Yogyakarta. The building were designed by Affandi himself and evoke natural shapes, such as a roof shaped like a banana leaf. There are three galleries in all, plus a studio. The first gallery displays mostly Affandi's own work, while the second gallery has Affandi's own collection of work by other artists on show. The third gallery and the studio house rotating shows and sales by local contemporary artists.

Other sights within the compound include a coffee and gift shop, which was originally Affandi's living quarters, a swimming pool, and other buildings.

Admission to Museum Affandi is 10,000 Rupiah (1.10 USD).
